    Why JPGs are often bigger than they need to be

    Phone cameras save at very high quality by default, which is sensible for the original but wasteful for anything you are sending or publishing. A 12-megapixel photo straight off a phone is commonly 4 to 8 MB, and the same photo at a fraction of that size is indistinguishable on any screen.

    That is what this tool exploits. JPG compression discards detail your eye does not register, and there is a lot of headroom between "camera default" and "visibly degraded".

    How far you can push it

    A typical phone photo compresses to around 500 KB with no visible difference at normal viewing distance. At 200 KB you may notice slight softening in fine texture if you look closely. Below 100 KB, blockiness starts appearing around sharp edges.

    The tool reports the quality level it settled on, so if a result looks soft you can see it landed low and choose a larger target rather than guessing.

    Are my files uploaded to a server?

    No. The conversion runs inside your browser using your device's own processor. Your files are never transmitted anywhere, which is why the tool works even if you disconnect from the internet after the page loads.

    Will compressing the same JPG twice degrade it?

    Yes — each lossy re-encode loses a little more. Always compress from your original rather than from a previously compressed copy.

    Is WebP better than JPG for this?

    Usually, yes. WebP holds noticeably more detail at the same file size. Choose it unless the file needs to open in older software outside a browser.

    Is there a file limit or a paywall?

    There is no account, no watermark, and no upload cap. Because your device does the work, the only practical limit is your available memory. The site is funded by ads, not subscriptions.
