    Why iPhone photos will not open on Windows

    Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC — a modern format that stores the same image quality in roughly half the space of a JPG. The trade-off is compatibility: many Windows applications, older photo editors, web upload forms and print services still cannot read HEIC at all.

    Does converting reduce photo quality?

    At the default Balanced setting the difference is not visible in normal viewing. The resulting JPG will usually be somewhat larger than the HEIC, because HEIC is a more efficient format.

    How do I stop my iPhone saving HEIC in the first place?

    On your iPhone, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose "Most Compatible". New photos will be saved as JPG, though existing HEIC photos stay as they are.
