Why these conversions are usually instant
A video file is a container: a wrapper holding a video stream and an audio stream side by side. MP4, MOV and MKV are three such wrappers, and they frequently hold exactly the same thing — H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio.
When that is the case, changing format means repackaging rather than converting. The streams are copied into the new container untouched, which takes seconds even for a large file and loses no quality at all. Most online converters re-encode everything regardless, which is slower and worse.
Some files genuinely cannot be copied — VP9 and AV1 video, or ProRes from a professional camera, do not belong in an MP4. Those are re-encoded, which takes minutes and costs a little quality. Each tool tells you which path it took once the file is ready.
What running in the browser means for video
Video files are big, and uploading one to a conversion site means waiting for the upload, waiting in a queue, then waiting for the download — with a copy of your footage sitting on someone else's server throughout. Here the file never moves.
The trade-off is that your own device does the work. Copying streams is light enough that a phone manages it comfortably. A full re-encode is demanding, and a browser tab has a memory ceiling: on a phone, a long video that needs re-encoding may reload the tab rather than finish. Use a computer for those.
