    Why AVIF files will not open

    AVIF is a newer image format built on video compression technology, and it produces dramatically smaller files than JPG at the same quality. Websites have started serving it for exactly that reason, which is why you keep ending up with .avif files you did not ask for.

    The problem is everything outside a browser. Most desktop photo viewers, older editors, print services and upload forms have never added AVIF support, so the file that looked fine on the website simply refuses to open on your computer.

    What conversion does

    Your browser already knows how to decode AVIF — that is how it displayed the image in the first place. This tool uses that same decoder, then re-encodes the result as JPG, which every piece of software on earth can read.

    Because JPG has no transparency, any transparent areas are filled with white. Convert to PNG instead if you need to keep them.

    Are my files uploaded to a server?

    No. The conversion runs inside your browser using your device's own processor. Your files are never transmitted anywhere, which is why the tool works even if you disconnect from the internet after the page loads.

    Why can I not open .avif files?

    AVIF is a web-first format. Browsers decode it natively, but most desktop applications, printers and upload forms have not added support yet.

    Will the JPG be larger than the AVIF?

    Almost certainly, often two to four times larger. AVIF is a far more efficient format; you are trading file size for universal compatibility.

    Is there a file limit or a paywall?
