BMP files are enormous for no good reason
BMP stores images essentially uncompressed — roughly three bytes for every pixel. A 4000×3000 photo comes to about 36 MB as a BMP and perhaps 2 MB as a JPG, with no visible difference at sensible quality.
The format survives mainly because old Windows software and some scanners still output it. There is almost never a reason to keep a photograph as a BMP.
